Description

I’ve spent most of my career in data. I wrote Fundamentals of Data Engineering and, more recently, Mixed Model Arts. I know the tribes, the endless debates, the terminology, and the odd details we get pedantic about. I also have a mental glitch where I see the world through South Park episodes.

Lately I’ve been hanging out more with the knowledge crowd. At this event, people working on ontologies, knowledge graphs, and semantics are now friends. It wasn’t always the case. That world ran parallel to mine for years, and frankly, most data engineers like me paid it zero attention. But spending time with “knowledge people” made me realize they’re onto something.

They’ve spent decades (or millennia) obsessing over meaning, relationships, identity, and context. Meanwhile, data engineers focused on scale: moving, storing, transforming, and querying information fast. We were tackling different angles of the same underlying problem, barely acknowledging each other.

Now AI is smashing the two groups together. Naturally, I’m going to explain this collision using South Park.

Using various South Park episodes, including "W.T.F." to highlight how absurdly pedantic people can get about context and definition, along with wrestlers, goths, underpants gnomes, and other memes, I’ll cover the journeys, inflection points, tensions, and ultimate convergence of the data and knowledge camps. We’ll look at what we can learn from each other and why these overlaps matter more than ever.
